Charles McCullough is no stranger to the Texas broadcasting scene. He founded CMC Communications Broadcasting in 1991, drawing from his roots that trace back to his college years at Texas A&M University. He got his start at KAMU, gaining hands-on experience in production and broadcast technology.

Charles is a fixture at area high school football games, covering teams from Galveston, Angleton, Hitchcock, Dickinson, La Porte, Friendswood and more, as well as Clear Lake Lady Falcons volleyball and others.

In 1984, Charles joined Galveston’s KGBC at a pivotal moment – just before longtime owner Vandy Anderson began considering selling the station. That chapter marked a key turning point in his career, laying the groundwork for his own venture. From college radio to running his own company, Charles has built a career defined by passion, persistence, and a love for the art of communication. He took some time to chat with Humans of Galveston.

Humans of Galveston: How did you get your start in broadcasting?

McCullough: I got my start in college at Texas A&M University, working at KAMU, the campus radio station. That’s where I first got hands-on experience with production and the broadcast technology of the time. It was a great training ground and sparked my passion for the industry.

Humans of Galveston: Where did your career take you after college?

McCullough: In 1984, I joined KGBC during a significant time in the station’s history. The owner, Vandy Anderson, was just beginning to consider selling the station—a decision that would eventually come to pass. Being there during that transition helped me better understand the business side of broadcasting, not just the technical side.

Humans of Galveston: What led you to start CMC Communications Broadcasting?

McCullough: After several years in the industry, I wanted to take the next step and launch something of my own. In 1991, I founded CMC Communications Broadcasting. It was the culmination of years of experience and a growing desire to create a platform that reflected my own vision for radio and communication.

Humans of Galveston: Looking back, what’s been the constant throughout your journey?

McCullough: From college radio to running my own company, the constant has been a deep passion for communication, especially the craft of radio. Every chapter of my career has been driven by that love for connecting with people through broadcasting
