Young singer makes Sinatra his own
While strolling along Postoffice Street during a recent ArtWalk, I heard a smooth, melodic voice drifting down the street.
I followed the sound and found Grant Masters standing there singing Sinatra and other jazz standards. What caught me off guard was how young he was. Grant is just 20, but he was handling those timeless tunes with the confidence and style of a singer who had been at it for decades.
I stopped. Then I stayed awhile.
And I’m glad I did.
There was something refreshing about seeing someone from his generation embrace music created long before he was born — and not just sing it, but being completely at home in it.
Grant has been performing around Galveston, including downtown on Postoffice Street and at the Galveston Naval Museum. He’s young, but his musical soul clearly has a few miles on it.
That’s one of the things I enjoy about ArtWalk. You never quite know what you’ll run across. This time, it was Grant Masters — 20 years old, standing on Postoffice Street and singing Sinatra like he’d been doing it all his life.
Perhaps that’s how music endures. One generation discovers what another generation loved and makes it their own.
