Bob Thomas doesn’t just play music. He lives by a code. When we caught up with him at 1877 On The Strand, the Houston-based guitarist shared a few of the “Gold Standard” principles he and his group live by: Show up. Pay yourself first. Respect the grind. With his laid-back wisdom and work ethic, Bob reminds us that success starts with presence — and a good groove.

Humans of Galveston: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Bob Thomas: My name’s Bob Thomas and I’m with The Gold Standard Band out of Houston, Texas.
Humans of Galveston: What are the ‘Gold Standard’ principles your band lives by?
Bob Thomas: First one is simple — show up. Ninety percent of life is just showing up. If you’re struggling but you show up and you put in the work, people will see you. And when they see you working, they’ll help you. People respect that.
Humans of Galveston: What’s another principle you live by?
Bob: Always pay yourself first. That first 10 percent – put it away. Save it. It’s a mindset. Especially as musicians, we don’t make much. So you’ve got to be smart about it. That’s a frugality thing.
Humans of Galveston: What brings you to Galveston?
Bob Thomas: This is our second time playing here. We’ve hit a couple spots — the Poop Deck and a few other clubs. We’re just starting to explore the scene down here, and it’s been good energy.
Humans of Galveston: Any final words for the world?
Bob Thomas: Not at the moment, man. I’m more of a catch-it-when-it-hits-me kind of guy. But I appreciate you wanting to share our story.
Humans of Galveston: Anything you want folks to know about the band?
Bob Thomas: We’re from Houston, but we play all over. We’re out here grinding, doing what we love. That’s really it.
Catch Bob and The Gold Standard Band live wherever the groove takes them next. And remember: show up, pay yourself first, and let the music carry you.
