Mrs. Joyce Lacy and her sister, Rosalie Tottenham have dedicated their lives shaping young minds in the Galveston Independent School District. As women who taught, mentored, and uplifted young people, they’ve seen the city’s history unfold from the classroom and beyond.

In the candid interview below, the lifelong members of Galveston’s Reedy Chapel AME Church reflect on their time as teachers, the values they instilled in their students, and the importance of independence, hard work, and self-respect.

Their message to their former students and today’s youth is clear: “Don’t expect your parents to take care of you forever. Work hard, find your way, and stand on your own two feet.”

Join us in celebrating the legacy of these powerful women whose legacy continues to inspire.
